From IS3NA President Kathie-Seley-Radtke:

Dear Colleagues: It is with great sadness that I inform you of the loss of one of our dearest members, Dr. Kyo Watanabe. As those of you who attended the IRT in Poland last August, you know we honored Kyo with a Lifetime Achievement award to recognize his extensive contributions to the nucleoside field and to our Society. We were thrilled he could make it to Poland despite being in the throws of chemotherapy and fighting his cancer. For me personally, presenting him with this award was one of the highlights of the conference, as Kyo was a colleague and friend and one of the "grandfathers" of our field. Unfortunately Kyo lost his battle a few days ago, but even when my husband Mike and I spoke to him a few days before he died, he still had his sharp wit and unending humor. This is what I, and many of you, will miss the most – his humor and his laugh. Kyo will always be remembered as one of the most creative and productive nucleoside scientists we have all had the pleasure of knowing, but I know I speak for many of us – he was more than that – he was a true friend and he will be dearly missed.

Kyo's funeral will be Tuesday, April 13th in Atlanta, Georgia and if you'd like to send correspondence, please address it to Kyo's daughter Kanna:
